Course Description:
This course covers the safe use of equipment, tools, and materials. Students will first learn to identify metals, and to perform oxyacetylene welding and torch cutting. They will then receive instruction in drawing and interpreting welding symbols. Afterwards, they will learn basic gas-cutting principles and practices with attention to mild steel pipe welding, as well as the art of brazing silver soldering. The course will then emphasize principles in the types of welding that require the use of shielded metal arc welding (SMAW). It then provides basic welding principles and skills in SMAW, including set-up and operation of SMAW equipment to make pad, fillet, and groove welds. Students will need to use a computer for research in the development of a written project, which will be presented orally. Lab fee is required.
